Résumé Tips

What is a résumé?

  • A résumé is a self-promotional document that presents you and highlights your skills, for the purpose of getting a job interview.

What should I put in my résumé?

  • Your résumé should always include your full name, home address, phone number, and e-mail address.
  • A good résumé is not only about your past jobs. It should also highlight what you have accomplished and the skills you have obtained.

Tips for writing a good résumé

  • Keep it short and to the point, no more than two pages.
  • Always type your résumé on white paper.
  • Double check for typing mistakes, have it proofread.
  • Make sure that all the information is significant, correct and up to date.
  • Do not include personal information such as your SIN#, age, height, weight, marital status, etc.
  • Your résumé should be adapted for each job.
  • Highlight your skills such as computer knowledge and language proficiencies
  • Your résumé should only contain experiences that are relevant to the position you are applying for. Your résumé should also capture the employer’s attention fairly quickly, it should be easy to read and it should have an appropriate format.
  • Be specific when writing your résumé. Use words that describe the size and qualities of your accomplishments.
  • Keep your résumé updated and current.

How to decide what type of résumé to use?

  • A chronological format is the easiest to prepare and works well if you are staying in the same field of work. It presents your work history in a logical order; it focuses on specific jobs and is effective for those who know what they want.
  • A functional résumé is best for those who have a wide variety of work experiences not directly related to the position they are applying for. It also provides a summary of your qualifications and works well for recent graduates with little or no work experience.
  • A combined résumé is a mix of both chronological and functional résumés. This type of resume can be powerful since it emphasizes your skills and accomplishments and provides a chronological account of your work and education background. This type of résumé takes the best features of chronological and functional résumés and presents an overview of your different skills.
