2017 YMCA Peace Medallion Nominations

YMCA_Peace Week

YMCA Peace Week takes place November 20th - 24th, 2017 and we are now accepting nominations for the YMCA Peace Medallion!
Each year, YMCAs across Canada celebrate acts of peace by recognizing individuals and groups who, without any special resources, status, wealth or position, have demonstrated a commitment to building peace within their community or communities elsewhere in the world. During YMCA Peace Week, local peacemakers will receive special recognition and a medallion at Peace Medallion ceremonies across Canada. Peacemakers are selected through a nomination process. To nominate a Peacemaker, please review the nomination guidelines and selection criteria.

  • Nominations should focus on activities that have taken place within the last two years
  • YMCA staff members are not eligible for nomination
  • Professionals who are paid to do peacemaking work are not eligible for nomination
  • Self-nominations will not be considered

"...Peace has many dimensions. It is not only a state of relationships among nations. We cannot expect to live in a world of peace if we are unable to live in peace with those close to us – even those who differ from us... The responsibility for peace begins with each person, in relationship with family and friends, and extends to community life and national activities..." YMCA Statement of Peace, World Alliance of YMCAs, 1981

Peace Medallion recipients should demonstrate the values of PEACE:

P = Participation - getting involved and encouraging others to get involved in community-building activities
E = Empathy - listening and understanding diverse perspectives to create a sense of belonging for all
A = Advocacy - making the case for positive change in the community
C = Community - building and strengthening community connections and capacity
E = Empowerment - inspiring others to foster peace and helping them gain the skills and tools to succeed

To nominate an individual or group for the Peace Medallion, or for more information, please download the Nomination Form (click here) or submit your nomination through our online Nomination Form (click here).

Please submit all completed Peace Medallion nominations by 5pm on Monday, October 30th, 2017 to:

YMCA Membership Fee Update

This Fall, the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario, along with YMCAs across Canada, will be implementing a new membership software system. This new software will offer enhanced customer service including, for the first time, the ability for members and participants to register for YMCA memberships, programs and services online. Staff are currently working hard to ensure a smooth transition.

At the same time, our YMCAs have also been reviewing our current membership categories to determine where changes could be made to better serve our members and our community. Our research has shown an opportunity for updates that would benefit individuals and families while allowing us to continue to deliver the highest quality programs and services possible.

As a result of these findings, and in coordination with the launch of our new software system, the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario wishes to announce the YMCA will be introducing a single-price YMCA Family Membership which will replace our current tiered-price family membership. We will also be offering a more inclusive Young Adult Membership (for everyone ages 18-29 years) which will replace our current Student Membership (for students ages 18-24 years). Finally, the YMCA is updating our memberships to include a new and convenient bi-weekly payment option. Our new membership fees beginning September 15, 2017 will be:
